In shaping the relationship between buildings and the surrounding landscape, there are two opposing trends – likeness or contrast. The most common way to set a building apart in a situation where the surroundings are without expression and character has become the application of the law of contrast. Such a situation occurred in Rataje – a district of Poznań built by the communist authorities. Here, various forms of churches, historic chapels and greenery meet the gray blocks of flats. See society’s response to the standards imposed on it by the authorities.
This project was created thanks to a workshop by PIX.HOUSE – a photography gallery in Poznan. I worked with such photographers as Adrian Wykrota and Mariusz Forecki.
The project was focused around the concept of “Ex Alia Parte” – a Latin phrase meaning “from the other side”. This phrase fully encapsulates our experience of living in a modern world when we are often divided – both literally and metaphorically – into two opposing sides, instead of coming together.
This project shows us that no matter what side of the fence we’re on, we can still come together and explore the “other side” – both figuratively and literally. By looking at the experiences from the other side of the divide, we can better understand and appreciate each other and our differences in views and beliefs.
I hope that this project helps to bridge the gap between the two sides of the fence and encourages understanding and dialogue between all.
